As concerned citizens of Florida and the United States of America, we, the Ecological Student Citizens of Seminole County are urging the cities of Seminole County to sign the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. We are deeply concerned that our country did not take part in the Kyoto Treaty, especially considering we are one of the largest creators of pollution and global greenhouse gas emissions. This is an opportunity for the local governments of our country to take action where the federal government has failed. Just because the nation is not requiring action on a federal scale for preventative actions doesn’t mean we, the average citizens and local authorities, cannot show the pride we have for a clean environment.
UPDATE: On The President's Plan Will Help Confront Climate Change By Stopping The Projected Growth Of Carbon Dioxide Emissions From Cars, Light Trucks, And SUVs Within 10 Years.
In this time when the environment is becoming a front-running issue to most Americans, we are giving you an opportunity to shine in front of your constituents and take part in a movement that is really going to make a difference to reduce global warming. While this may seem difficult, changes can be as simple as replacing incandescent traffic lights with more energy-efficient LED ones, taking advantage of biofuels for the city’s fleet, or simply encouraging fuel efficient habits among public drivers- which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, saves consumers money and ultimately leads to a more sustainable economy that is less vulnerable to political disturbances in other parts of the world.
As a part of a county that takes so much pride in its natural beauty, claiming to be “Florida’s natural choice”, it only makes sense that its cities would demonstrate such pride through measures against greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. We urge you to rise above politics in order to promote basic responsibility- protecting the earth in which we live and securing the future for generations to come.
